8002F310 PS3 Update Error

You may encounter this error when updating your Playstation 3. It will cause your playstation to repeatedly restart as the update cannot continue (causes can be various, corrupt package when downloading is the most likely culprit).

The worst part of this problem is that you cannot enter service mode as the update tries to reinstall before service mode can be enabled.

This is how it can be fixed.

Things you will need:
  • A Screwdriver (to take out PS3 HDD)
  • A Spare 2.5" SATA HDD
  • A USB with the update package you are trying to install

Step 3

  1. Download the update on PC onto your USB drive ROOT>PS3>UPDATE>PS3UPDAT.PUP
  2. Eject all media and switch off the Playstation completely.
  3. Unplug everything, then proceed to remove your HDD (Instructions in the manual).
  4. Remove the original HDD from its casing and replace it with your spare.
  5. Place spare into the PS3 and plug it all back in.
  6. Connect your USB with the update into the PS3.
  7. Turn it on, format your Spare and install the update.
  8. After that is complete your PS3 will boot normally.
  9. Power off the Playstation, unplug it, and then remove the spare.
  10. Take your Original PS3 HDD and place it back in.
  11. It will boot up normally as the PS3 update had been successfully installed using the spare.
  12. For safe measure, reinstall the update by selecting system update from the XMB and update from your USB again.
It should all be working normally and with your data intact.

UPDATE: Some DLC may have to be reinstalled (this was the case with me).
